A speed development clinic for athletes funded by the Columbiana Park and Recreation Board and organized by Shelby County High School head football coach and athletic director Geoff Walters recently featured former Olympic gold medalist Willie Smith.

Smith was on the 1988 mile relay team which won the gold medal. The clinic was a two-hour camp centered around linear speed development.

&uot;Although two hours of training is not nearly enough to improve speed, we received some drills and running tips that if we practice these enough we will surely become faster,&uot; said Walters.

The clinic was open to the public and attended by 46 students and the entire SCHS coaching staff.

The coaches received instruction from Smith, as well as participated in the clinic.

&uot; This was a great opportunity to receive training from one of the most recognized figures in track and field, and we greatly appreciate the Columbiana Park and Recreation Board for funding this activity,&uot; said Walters
