Shelby County High School used 21 first half points and strong defense to defeat Moody 21-0 at home last Friday night.

The Wildcats got an early break when an errant snap eluded Moody punter Brett Howard. Jamie Leeper pounced on the ball for SCHS.

Michael Gaiters quickly gained 11 yards up the middle for the Wildcats before Derek Harris got the Wildcats out to an early lead, rambling 16 yards for the first score of the night.

Eric Hernandez added the extra point, and SCHS had its first lead of the early season.

Junior Drew Holsomback set up the next SCHS score with an interception of an Eric Tatum pass at the Shelby County 46. The Wildcats then began a 54-yard march for the second score of the night.

Mark Lemley added to the Wildcat lead with a 15-yard scoring run and Hernandez tacked on the PAT for a 14-0 lead.

Sean McKinley set up the final score of the night with a blocked punt. Lemley picked up the block and ran it in from 32 yards out for the score. Hernandez’s extra point gave the Wildcats a commanding 21-0 lead at the half.

The score would remain that way the rest of the game as a tough SCHS defense kept Moody in check most of the night, allowing the Blue Devils only 207 total yards of offense with only eight coming through the air.

SCHS finished the night with 220 yards total offense, 191 coming on 39 rushes.

The Wildcats will next play host to Hayden Friday night
