Preserve a precious resource
The Cahaba River is one of Alabama and Shelby County’s most precious resources.
With the vast amount of development springing up in our area, it has become increasingly important to preserve that resource.
The Upper Cahaba Watershed Study could be the most significant process involving the river in recent history.
Local officials should be commended for their efforts to develop a uniform plan to maintain the Cahaba as a source of clean drinking water, a place of recreation and a natural shelter for a diverse array of fish and wildlife.
Organizations like the Cahaba River Society also do a good job of promoting the interests of those who care about the river and its wildlife.
Although recent developments point toward a positive future for the Cahaba, it is also up to the citizens of Shelby County to actively participate in the Upper Cahaba Watershed Study.
While some of the municipalites in the watershed area have already contributed financially to the project, Shelby County residents should encourage all of the impacted cities to invest in the river’s future.
By attending the public hearings and becoming involved in the Upper Cahaba Watershed Study, Shelby County residents can ensure the state’s longest free-flowing river will continue to be a valuable resource
