Warriors win area, to host ECHS in playoffs

The Thompson High School Warriors completed a perfect area record with a 5-3 win over in-county rival Briarwood last Wednesday at THS.
Robert Powell (6-2) got the win, going 6 innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 9 batters. Powell walked 3 and hit 2 Lion batters.
Ryan Chase got the save, pitching 1 innings and striking out 1 batter.
Jimbo Crew was tagged with the loss for the Lions, allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits while striking out 10 batters in 6 2/3 innings.
Gavin McGuire led the Warriors at the plate, going 2-for-4 with 2 doubles and an RBI. Hunter Hammonds was 1-for-3 with a single and 3 RBI.
The win clinched the Class 5A, Area 7 title for the Warriors, who finished the regular season 17-12 and a perfect 6-0 in area play.
Thompson will play host to Escambia County High School today (Wednesday, April 23) in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.
David Eady led the Lions offensively, going 1-for-2 with 1 RBI. Kevin Cope was 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI and Simeon Castille went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
The Lions defeated McAdory last Thursday night 4-2 in an area playoff game at Thompson High School to claim the second spot in the area and advance to the playoffs.
The Lions will travel to Charles Henderson High school in Troy Thursday for the first round.
Thompson preceded the Briarwood win with an 8-6 area win over McAdory last Tuesday night.
Wally Franklin (7-2) got the win, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings.
He struck out 7 and walked 3 batters. Powell got the save, pitching 1 inning and allowing no hits while striking out 2 and walking 1.
McGuire was 2-for-4 at the plate with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Matt Myles was 3-for-4 with 2 singles, a double and 1 RBI and Aaron Barranco was 2-for-4 with 2 singles
