Shelby Raiders win JV tourney

Shelby Academy’s junior varsity team came back from the loser’s bracket and defeated Coosa Valley Academy twice to claim the 2003 AISA 1A/3A JV Baseball Tournament title at CVA last week.
CVA defeated the Raiders 3-2 earlier in the day to send them to the loser’s bracket.
In game No. 1 of the championship, Kevin Lackey (1-0-1) got the win as the Raiders defeated CVA 9-3.
Cale Thompson (0-1-1) was tagged with the loss for the Rebels.
In the game No. 2 of the finals, Josh Kervin (2-0) got the win, leading Shelby Academy to an 8-3 championship win.
CVA’s Cooper Johnson (1-1) got the loss.
Coosa Valley made it to the championship game via a sweep in the winner’s bracket earlier in the day. The Rebels’ first win came 6-1 over Kingwood in game No. 1 of the tournament. Cooper Johnson claimed the win while A. Pearce (0-1) got the loss for the Lions.
In game No. 2 of the tournament, Shelby defeated Bessemer 8-0 behind the pitching of Josh Sharp (1-0). Jared Jones (0-1) of Bessemer got the loss.
In game No. 3 of the tournament Bessemer eliminated Kingwood with a 5-3 win. J. Lovelady (0-1) got the loss for the Lions while Josh Brown (1-0) earned the win for Bessemer.
In the fourth game of the tournament, it took the Rebels of CVA 7 innings to dispose of the SA Raiders and claim the winner’s bracket. Zack Taylor (1-0) got the win and Thompson picked up the save. Ingram was tagged with the loss for the Raiders.
Shelby Academy made it to the championship game against CVA by way of downing Bessemer 3-1 in the championship of the loser’s bracket. Josh Kervin picked up the win and Lackey got the save for the Raiders while Jared Jones got the loss for Bessemer
