Calera earns playoff spot

The Calera Eagles clinched a playoff berth with their win on the road against region opponent Keith High School.

The Eagles (6-0) defeated Keith 29-16 to guarantee a playoff appearance for the second year in a row.

&uot;Now it falls to positioning yourself,&uot; said Calera head coach Ken Adams. &uot;We want to play a home game in the first round of the playoffs.&uot;

By winning the region outright, the Eagles can secure home-field advantage in the early rounds of the playoffs. Calera has put together back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the 1980s.

The Eagles outgained Keith

with 424 yards of total offense to Keith’s 245.

Despite fumbling the ball six times and losing four, the Eagles were able to put Keith away, scoring a touchdown in each quarter. Calera quarterback Jay Haynes had a big night completing 4 of 6 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown, including a strike to running back T.J. Green.

Haynes accounted for all four of Calera’s touchdowns. He also ran for 65 yards and three scores. Green had 112 yards on just six carries with a long run of 36.

The Calera defense held Keith to 16 points, giving up touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters.

Tim Baker led Calera defenders with 10 tackles, a sack and a safety.

The Eagles, on their quest for a

a region championship, will have to stop at Highland Home Friday night.
