County not immune to crime

As this week’s front page of the Shelby County Reporter clearly shows, our county is not immune to crime.

Shelby County is home to sexual predators, drug dealers, swindlers and embezzlers. While cities such as Helena have exemplified the notion of safe communities, there will always be at least some criminals in any society.

The important message should be that our law enforcement agencies, including the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department and others, all work tirelessly to serve and protect citizens.

This week’s stories should remind citizens that we are all capable of becoming victims, but together we can all build a safer society.

There are things that ordinary citizens can do, such as organizing neighborhood crime watches. Also, keep an eye on children at all times. It is also important to

monitor new sources of influence, such as the Internet.

The dangers facing our most precious citizens are increasing daily.

The mug shots that occasionally dot the front page should not ruin the entire county’s image as a family-friendly, safe environment
