The Shelby County Regional Juvenile Detention Facility was recognized by county commission members Monday night for its efficient operation since opening in 1998.

County Manager Alex Dudchock said the Department of Youth Services completed an audit of the facility recently, giving the facility 100 percent on all mandatory standards.

The 34-bed facility features in-site education and health services for incarcerated youth.

During Monday’s County Commission meeting, Dudchock gave a few details showing the facility’s rapid adjustment and growth since opening in 1998.

So far, the youngest inmate at the facility was 8 years old, with the oldest being 19.

The average age is 15, Dudchock said.

So far, 30 inmates have completed their GEDs, Dudchock said.

In 2003, the facility took in 622 prisoners, down slightly each year since 2000.

Debra Roulaine, manager of the detention center, attended Monday’s meeting.

She said the audit recognized the staff members, safety and treatment of juveniles as well as the cleanliness and maintenance of the facility.
