U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus made an interesting request last week when he asked Congress to call an oversight hearing to investigate the actions of the NCAA.

While the governing body of college athletics might warrant further scrutiny and may even need to be reformed, the governing body of our nation already faces a plate full of serious problems.

We need to focus on the main courses, not some appetizer such as college football and NCAA sanctions.

While college sports dominate the public’s mind throughout the year, our elected officials must remain tuned into more important issues.

A quick glance at the newspaper should let Bachus know about problems such as prisoner abuse in Iraq, soaring gas prices at home, and crippled state budgets.

Voters need Bachus fighting for Alabama’s needs and those of the rest of the nation. Forget about sports. That domain is best left up to the experts.

Bachus made the wrong call this time. He left his stoop and wandered onto the field. Now, he should rally the team of constituents and return to politics. There’s much more victory available to him that way
