From Staff Reports

Rep. Mike Hill of Columbiana has been appointed to the Legislature’s Joint Transportation Committee.

&uot;Rep. Hill is a capable legislator who has served his constituents well for many years,&uot; said House speaker Seth Hammett, who announced Hill’s appointment. &uot;I am confident that his service on the Joint Transportation Committee will be equally distinguished.&uot;

The JTC oversees the development and construction of state roads and bridges pursuant to plans drawn up by the Alabama Department of Transportation. It also provides critical input into the development of the state’s five-year road plan and monitors the ALDOT budget.

The committee considers such factors as industrial and agricultural growth, highway safety, ecological input, recreation and tourism when addressing highway proposals.

Hill replaces former Rep. John Hawkins, who died during June following a long illness. Hill will represent the 6th Congressional District on the committee.

&uot;I am excited about finally having the opportunity to serve on this committee after 12 years in the Legislature,&uot; Hill said. &uot;I could never fill John’s shoes, but I hope to make a difference by finding a way to ease traffic congestion in the metro Birmingham area.

&uot;I am very grateful to the speaker (Hammett) for having the confidence in me to make this appointment.
