Calera basketball standout George Drake verbally committed to play college hoops at Vanderbilt University last week.

The 6-foot-3 guard/forward is projected to play shooting guard in college and is considered one of the state’s top prospects.

Drake chose Vanderbilt over Alabama. He was also being recruited by the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Ole Miss and Auburn.

&uot;I didn’t feel like there was anything else holding me back,&uot; Drake said about making his decision to attend Vandy public months before the start of his senior season. &uot;I felt like there was no need to prolong it any further.&uot;

Drake has been named Alabama’s 2A player of the year in each of the past two seasons.

This summer he participated in two of the nation’s premier player camps, the NBA Top 100 and the Nike All-America Camp
