Calera police address sexual assault issues

Calera police changed a city policy that will allow specially-trained nurses to treat sexual assault and rape victims. The policy change is a continued effort of Calera police to address crime victims.
Calera Police Chief Jim Finn asked the city council to continue a grant program already in place. The program, titled S.A.N.E. (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner), is administered through the Alabama Victim’s Compensation.
Finn said the program allows a nurse trained in sexual assault evidence recovery and victim services to administer the rape kits used when a sexual assault or rape is reported.
&uot;When we have a victim, we would take them to this nurse as opposed to any nurse that’s on duty at the hospital to administer the kit,&uot; Finn said
