Shelby County is building two new parks in the cities of Harpersville and Wilsonville.

The new parks are part of an on-going effort by the county to build parks in conjunction with cities.

The county approved bids in November for construction of J.W. Donahoo Park in Harpersville and Oak Meadow Park in Wilsonville. County commission chairman Larry Dillard said the county reserves money in the budget for such projects.

&uot;We work with the cities,&uot; Dillard said. &uot;There was no way they could do it themselves. We put money in the budget every year for it.

The two new parks will push the county’s number of parks to 20.

Last year, the county helped open George Roy Park in Calera through a similar project in which the city pays some cost of the park over a period of years.

In Wilsonville, the only existing park is at Wilsonville Elementary School. Mayor Rosemary Liveoak said the city uses the one-eighth mile walking track at the park frequently, but the new park is a welcome addition.

Oak Meadow Park is planned for property adjacent to Fire Station Number Two on County Road 103 in Wilsonville. The park will feature a pavilion, parking lot and restrooms.
