For the first time in a while, Kirby Johnson wasn’t sure about what was happening before her on the basketball court.

When play was stopped to recognize the senior point guard for eclipsing the 2000-career-point mark during Friday’s game, Johnson – who for years has had complete command over the court as Coosa Valley Academy’s star player – was dumbfounded.

&uot;I had no idea they were going to do that,&uot; she said. &uot;It was kind of weird. I had never seen a game stopped right in the middle for a presentation before.&uot;

Johnson, who has started for the Lady Rebels varsity squad since the sixth grade, reached 2000 in the second half of CVA’s win over Chambers Academy Friday night.

Early in the third period on a fast break, Kimberly Rutledge passed the ball back to Johnson who sunk the layup to clear the milestone.

&uot;I can’t describe it,&uot; Johnson said. &uot;It was such an honor to (reach 2000) at home and to do it during a CVA win.&uot;

The 5-foot-4 Johnson is averaging near 16 points and six assists per game this season, while shooting 42 percent from the three-point line.

&uot;She knows basketball and sees the court as well as anyone I’ve ever coached,&uot; said CVA head coach Kimbo Rutledge.

Rutledge said as far as they know, school officials believe Johnson is the first Lady Rebel to reach 2000 career points. Records are not available for every season, he said
