Communities can direct change

The Vincent community clearly loves its calendar. Nine on and three off, said the signs.
Their calendar works for them, they contend, and when you find something that’s working, why try and fix it?
Three members of the Shelby County school board agreed last week.
On the agenda was one calendar for the entire system. It was a move that many in Vincent claim would cause their community to take several steps backward.
After listening intently to the pleas of the Vincent community, a majority of the school board members voted to wait.
They directed the administration back to the drawing board to come up with another solution.
Either give Vincent a true year-round calendar reminiscent of the calendar as it was originally proposed years ago. Or come back to the board with one calendar for the entire system that is a year-round calendar.
That meeting was a clear example of how great it is to live in a country where freedom of speech allows regular citizens, children even, to voice opinions and change the way they are governed
