Lady Dogs defend home court with Area 8 crown

Tournament MVP Lakeisha Brown scored 15 of her game-high 28 points in the first half, staking the Lady Bulldogs to a 28-9 halftime lead, as Montevallo cruised to a 50-27 victory in the Class 4A, Area 8 championship game.
Brown knocked down 10 of 17 shots from the floor and canned 8 of 10 free throws en route to her career scoring high.
MHS shot 44 percent from the floor as a team, while holding the Lady Hornets to just 23 percent from the field.
Candice Fields rounded out the double figure scoring with 10 for the Lady Bulldogs, who improve to 21-9 with the tournament title win.
Brown was joined on the all-tournament team by senior Haley Dennis, who dished out 15 assists in the tournament’s two games, and senior Ashley Ebrahimi, who led Montevallo with 15 points in a 73-24 semifinal win over Holt.
The victory gives MHS the host role in their sub-region showdown with Bibb County Thursday night at 7 p.m. The two teams split a pair of games this season, with Montevallo winning 58-43 at home and losing 48-43 in Centreville. The Lady Bulldogs are 11-1 in Susie DeMent Gymnasium this season.
Calera wins Area 8
Shanavia Dowdell scored 36 points for the third-ranked Eagles as Calera downed Shades Mountain Christian to claim the 2A, Area 8 championship Monday night in Calera.
Dowdell was named tournament MVP. She also pulled down 14 rebounds in the title game.
