Constables.

We have them right here in Shelby County – in the 21st century.

In fact, if you voted last November, there’s a chance you may have been faced with voting for one – only in 11 of the county’s more than 40 available districts, though.

What do they do? They have no formal duties.

Are they actually used in the county for anything? No.

But do they cost anything? No.

So why get rid of the constable position?

It could become a liability for the county, law enforcement officials say.

And for that reason, moves have been made to eliminate the position of constable in Shelby County.

This is not the late 19th and early 20th century.

Our trained, qualified law enforcement officials work hard to do their jobs, and having untrained civilians with gun permits underfoot will eventually become a problem.

We stand firmly behind them in their efforts to eliminate this potential problem beforehand
