Summer is in full swing in Shelby County. You can tell in a lot of ways – not just the obliterating heat.

Driving through the county, there is evidence of children everywhere.

There are children at the parks, children at soccer and baseball fields and children playing simply on dirt areas.

Let’s make a conscious effort this summer to keep our children safe.

When driving, slow down. Although they should never be in the street, sometimes they will venture there. One moment looking away from the road could lead to tragedy.

When allowing children to swim, watch them. Water areas likes pools and lakes can be deathtraps for children who are not under supervision.

A safe summer will be a happy summer. Let that be the memory our children take back to school next year
