As Montevallo’s 38th annual Olympics Day approaches with its golf and tennis tournaments and 5-K run/walk, people will once again honor UM alum Hope Bryant Smith by their participation, Saturday, Aug. 6.
The run/walk is newly named in honor of the 1971 graduate, who was an avid runner, cyclist and tri-athlete. Smith died about two years ago after a long battle with breast cancer. Proceeds from the run/walk will go toward the endowment of the Hope Bryant Smith Community Service Scholarship.
Carolyn Miller, professor of kinesiology and coordinator of the run, said Smith gave much of her time through community service.
&uot; She was a graduate of Montevallo who unselfishly served others through many facets of community service, especially in the area of cancer awareness,&uot; Miller said.
Smith was a long-time ambassador and spokesperson for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She also served several years as chair and co-chair for the Komen Birmingham &uot;Race for the Cure&uot; and played a large role in its growth.
The 5-K run/walk will be Saturday, Aug. 6, with registration from 7 to 7:45 a.m. The race starts at 8 a.m., and the cost of the run is $15
