The Mountain Brook Spartans continued their dominance over Shelby County teams Friday night, handing Oak Mountain its first loss of the season, 14-0.
The Spartans used a high-powered running attack to defeat the Pelham Panthers in week two, and the Eagles spent most of Friday night in a similar predicament &045;&045; trying to figure out the Spartan ground game.
Mountain Brook quarterback Wesley Burkett rushed for 104 yards while Spartan running back Wilson Shoulders finished with 100 yards on 27 carries and one touchdown.
Burkett also finished 8-of-9 passing for 91 yards and a score.
The Eagles’ offense worked tirelessly to try and gather momentum, but a stifling Spartan defense held Oak Mountain to a total of 35 offensive plays and 172 yards for the game.
Eagles quarterback Richie Fordham completed 10-of-18 passes for 110 yards while Zack Fowler led Oak Mountain in receiving with five catches for 50 yards.
The loss dropped Oak Mountain to 2-1 on the season and left the Eagles sitting in third place in Region 6 play behind Hoover (2-0) and Mountain Brook (2-0).
The Eagles return home this week to face Gardendale Friday night at 7 p.m
