The Shelby Academy Raiders (7-1) pounced on Sumter Academy (3-5) with 30 first quarter points and then cruised to an easy region victory, 49-0.

Rick McBride started the scoring with a six-yard plunge and later added a five-yard score. Josh Kervin scored on a 43-yard punt return and a five-yard fumble recovery.

Cody Wilson and James Davidson scored on runs of 44 and 19 yards, respectively. Ronnie West sacked Sumter QB Hunter Spidle for a safety and Colby Green kicked 39 and 24-yard field goals for Shelby.

Preston Newsome lead the Raider defense with eight tackles while McBride recorded seven.

Colby Green, and Davidson each had an interception.

The Raiders travel to Columbiana for a region showdown with Cornerstone this Friday.

The Cornerstone Christian Chargers will try to bounce back from a 56-14 trouncing by at the hands of Southern Academy last week as they welcome the Raiders to town. Cornerstone’s only touchdowns in the game came off of passes from quarterback John Ray to quarterback converted to receiver Ty Youngblood. The pair connected for scores of 12 and 75 yard tosses in the fourth quarter.

Southern Academy used the running of Wallace Drury, 15 carries for 230 yards and four scores, to win the game.

The Kingwood Lions (7-1) won their homecoming game for the first time in five years Friday night, defeating Taylor Road Academy (2-6), 42-0. The win clinches a playoff spot for the Lions. Kingwood’s high-powered offense got back on track this week behind the passing of Andrew Pearce. Pearce was 10-for-19 for 211 yards and four touchdowns.

Lions’ head coach Jerry Stearns pulled his first-string backs and receivers for the second half. Andrew Steele came in for Pearce and lead the Lions to a score with 20 seconds left in the third quarter. Steele scored on a two yard keeper. Steele finished with 43 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown. Eric Marshall had 44 yards on 11 carries in the second half as well.

Cody Owens lead the Lions receivers with 114 yards on five catches including two touchdowns.

Kingwood goes to Montgomery to play Evangel Christian (6-2) with a win giving the Lions home field advantage in the first round
