The city of Calera is mourning the loss of one of its firefighters after a fatal wreck involving a fire truck and an 18-wheeler Monday.
Christopher James Roy, grandson of Mayor George Roy and a fulltime Calera firefighter since 2001, died from injuries sustained in the accident. He was 25.
The two-vehicle collision occurred at 9:38 a.m. at County Road 87 and the Interstate 65 South exit ramp, according to Sgt. Tim Sartain of the Alabama State Troopers.
&8220;All we know right now is that it is an intersection-related crash,&8221; Sartain said Monday afternoon, with investigators still on the scene.
Sartain said an investigation into the cause of the wreck would last at least several days.
Roy was transported from the scene of the crash to University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital by LifeSaver helicopter, where he died from injuries shortly before 1 p.m.
Backup fire services will be provided to Calera by the cities of Alabaster and Montevallo until the fire truck can be replaced, city officials said
