Gaston seeking landfill renewal

Alabama Power Company has applied to renew its current solid waste disposal permit for the E.C. Gaston Steam Plant No. 3 landfill in Wilsonville.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management gave notice of the application on Nov. 23. Those who wish to comment can do so in writing or request a public hearing with 35 days.

According to ADEM, the waste stream for the E.C. Gaston Steam Plant No. 3 Landfill will be &8220;non-hazardous construction and demolition waste such as waste building materials, masonry, wall board, roofing material, wood products, pipe, insulation and similar materials, rubbish such as paper products, cartons, cardboard, pallets, scrap metal, tires and furniture; asbestos containing material; and non-hazardous industrial wastes such as anion/cation resins and non-hazardous sandblast waste.&8221;

According to ADEM, the service area will be the E.C. Gaston Plant in Wilsonville. And the maximum average daily volume of waste disposed at the plant’s No. 3 Landfill will be 10 tons per day.

The No. 3 landfill consists of about 10 acres.

Copies of the public notice, landfill application and proposed permit are available for public inspection electronically at www.adem.state.al.us/publicnotice/publicnotice Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

According to ADEM, in order to affect final decisions, comments must offer technically substantial information that is applicable to the proposed permit.

A written request for a public hearing must also be made within 35 days following the publication date of the notice. The request must state the nature of the issues to be raised in the hearing.

&8220;The director shall hold a public hearing upon receipt of a significant number of technical requests.&8221;

ADEM reports that after consideration of all written comments, review of any public hearing record and consideration of the requirements of the Alabama Solid Waste Disposal Act and applicable regulations, a final decision will be made.

In addition, the department will develop a response to comments, which will become part of the public record and will be available upon request.

Notice will be sent to anyone requesting notice of the final action.
