County swimmers, divers excel at state

Swimmers and divers from five Shelby County high schools traveled to Auburn University Nov. 9-10 for the state high school diving and swimming championships.

Competitors from Oak Mountain, Briarwood, Spain Park, Pelham and Shelby County made the trip, with nine county individuals or teams finishing in the top 10 in their respective events.

Briarwood’s Mary Catherine Cochran was the highest finisher, taking third place in the girl’s one-meter dive. Cochran had a final score of 347.25 and finished behind two divers from Grissom high with scores of 347.40 and 363.55.

Cameron Bass and Leigh Hendry, both of Briarwood, took home seventh and eighth place, respectively, in the girl’s 200-yard freestyle. Bass finished with a time of 1:59.86 while Hendry was less than a second behind at 2:00.52. Bass also took sixth in the girl’s 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:16.86.

Oak Mountain’s Julie Beattie finished seventh in the girl’s 200-yard IM with a time of 2:17, while teammate Natalie Lenderman finished took 10th in the girl’s 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.74.

The Eagles took fourth in the girl’s 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:54.10. Kaitlyn Hite, Kreable Young, Beattie and Lenderman made up the Oak Mountain team.

OMHS’s girls also took seventh in the girl’s 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:49.49. Courtney McArthur, Lauren Everett, Lenderman and Young made up the 200-yard team for the Eagles.

The top finish for the Spain Park Lady Jaguars came in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team, made up of Emily Lin, Roxanne VanDeGraff, Colleen Wynn and Kelsey Weaver, finished in 11th place with a time of 4:06.73.

Pelham’s Felicia McGuire took the top spot for the Panthers in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing in a time of 1:04.61.

In girl’s team scoring, Oak Mountain finished in eighth with 90 points; Briarwood, ninth with 84 points; Spain Park, 28th with 21 points and Pelham, 40th with two points. Mountain Brook High School took first place on the girl’s side with 231 points.

Spain Park’s Tyler Campbell took the top place for Shelby County teams on the boy’s side, finishing third in the 100-yard backstroke. Campbell clocked in at 56.75 in the race.

Oak Mountain’s Sean Vibert took 10th in the boy’s 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.50. Vibert also finished sixth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:05.16.

The Eagles’ Michael Lewis finished fifth in the boy’s 100-yard freestyle in a time of 50.06 and fourth in the boy’s 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.09.

Jag teammates Daniel Hughes and Campbell took sixth and seventh, respectively, in the boy’s 100-yard butterfly. Hughes finished in 54:99 while Campbell finished in 56.85.

Shelby County’s Geoffrey Fuglaar finished 36th in the boy’s 100-yard freestyle preliminaries with a time of 58.48.
