Westwood Baptist Church, a member of the Southern Baptist Convention, was founded in 1981 and is located in Alabaster.

Pastored by Dr. Les Hughes, a native of Louisville, Ky., the church has plans to enter its new facility near the Weatherly subdivision along I-65.

The church offers a number of opportunities for its members and the community, including AWANA clubs in the summertime and men and women&8217;s ministries throughout the year. There are also a number of youth activities offered including, &8220;Inside Out&8221;, a youth worship service on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m.

Westwood also offers a number of evangelistic opportunities, with medical and construction mission trips to Peru, Mexico and across the continental United States in 2005.

Hughes pastored for 10 years in Mississippi and chaired the Department of Christian Studies and Philosophy at Mississippi College for four years. He has a Ph.D. in New Testament and Greek from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Hughes came to Westwood in December

2000.

Hughes said he believes the church plays a key role in today&8217;s society.

&8220;The church is a lighthouse,&8221; he said. &8220;It serves to point people to God through relationships with his son, Jesus Christ.&8221;

But, Hughes said, no church is without its share of challenges in today&8217;s world.

&8220;The Bible says, &8216;Unless the Lord builds the house, its builder labors in vain.&8217; The church family was God&8217;s idea and when members of the family don&8217;t put him first, conflict occurs.&8221;
