Elizabeth Houston Nolen, 91, of Calera died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at a local hospital. She was born March 5, 1914, in Waverly, Ala.

She was a lifelong resident of Shelby County and served as a teacher for 40 years, having retired from Thompson High School. She did volunteer work at Elvin Hill Elementary School and was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Percy Nolen.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Thomas (Gail) Nolen; her grandchildren, Betsy Nolen and Mack Nolen; her step-grandchildren, Alesha (Jeff) Smith and Jonathan Kennedy; and her step-great-grandchildren, Hannah Smith and Emma Smith.

Service was 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 16 at Columbiana United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Elliottsville Cemetery, Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home directing
