Girls basketball results: Calera downs SMCS

The Calera Lady Eagles had a bone to pick with Shades Mountain Friday night.
After falling to the SMCS
earlier this year, the Eagles won convincingly, 51-45, and moved into a tie for first place in Class 2A, Area 8 with that same Shades Mountain team.
&8220;We played well and came from behind in the second half,&8221; head coach James Knowles said.
Calera&8217;s Shanavia Dowdell finished with a team-high 20 points, scoring 15 of those in the third quarter alone.
Dowdell also had eight rebounds as the Lady Eagles moved to 14-5 on the season. Calera&8217;s Jalisa Thomas netted 11 points while teammate
Shelby Academy 35, Coosa Valley 23: The Shelby Academy Lady Raiders downed the Coosa Valley Lady Rebels with the help of Paris Renau&8217;s 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Renau&8217;s teammate Kimbrell Lee added seven points and six rebounds while the Rebels&8217; top scorer was Erica Hurst with 10 points. Kimberli Rutledge added nine points in the losing effort.
Hoover 67, Thompson 44: The Thompson Lady Warriors&8217; bid to upend area rival Hoover was stopped in the first quarter of Friday night&8217;s contest as the Lady Bucs jumped out to a 20-5 lead and went on to win, 67-44.
Hoover&8217;s Lindsay Harris had 27 points for the Bucs in the victory.
Tamara Williams led the Lady Warriors in scoring with 19 points while teammates Rhonda Watts and Zoriah Williams each finished with 10 points for Thompson in the loss.
The Lady Warriors&8217; struggles continue as Thompson falls to 5-3 in area play and 20-4 overall this season.
Oak Mountain 54, Pelham 50: The Oak Mountain Lady Eagles rode the momentum of an upset win over the Thompson Warriors Tuesday night to defeat the Pelham Panthers Friday night, 54-50.
Lauren Miller netted a team-high 16 points while teammate Ashley Stolze added 15 in the winning effort. But no points proved more important for the Eagles than four free-throws made by Oak Mountain&8217;s Kate Jazenski in the final 30 seconds of the game to seal the victory for her team.
Kingwood Christian 48, Pickens Academy 28: Kingwood&8217;s standout junior guard Hannah Phillips netted a team-high 24 points and finished with eight steals as the Lady Lions cruised to victory over Pickens Academy Friday night, 48-28.
Dee Marshall finished with nine points as Kingwood moved to a 17-3 record on the year.
Montevallo 60, Holt 17: The Montevallo Bulldogs are one win away from an area championship after defeating Holt Friday night, 60-17.
Desiree Jones netted 12 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs while teammate Rachel Willingham finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Alicia Gentry added 10 points for Montevallo.
&8220;We got a chance to play a lot of kids tonight,&8221; head coach Tena Niven said. &8220;Our three leading scorers came off the bench.&8221;
