County wrestlers head to state

Shelby County will be well-represented this weekend at the AHSAA state wrestling championships at the Pelham Civic Complex, with 18 local wrestlers competing in the two-day event.

The top-four wrestlers in each weight class from each of Saturday&8217;s Class 6A, Section 1 regional meet qualified for state.

Oak Mountain High School will send the most wrestlers to the state meet with seven while Pelham qualified, Spain Park will have four and Chelsea one.

The Eagles&8217; Steven West (112-pounds) took home first place with a victory by decision over Drew Campbell of Hoover.

Also qualifying for Oak Mountain were Michael Nix (103-pounds), James Copeland (140-pound), John Blakely (145-pounds), Will Pierce (160-pounds), Mitch Ray (189-pounds) and D.J. Looney (Heavyweight).

Pelham&8217;s state qualifiers are Tucker Burleson (130-pounds), Kevin Hendricks (152-pounds), Taylor Anchors (103-pounds), Lee Hallman (112-pounds), Matt O&8217;Hara (135-pounds) and Jeff Malone (171-pounds).

Spain Park&8217;s four qualifiers include Chris Goodwin (140-pound), Matt Noto (215-pounds), Ryan Pugh (Heavyweight) and Brandon Neal (130-pounds).

The Eagles finished third with 178.5 points in the team competition while Pelham and Spain Park took sixth and eighth with 86.5 and 79 points, respectively.

The Chelsea Hornets qualified one wrestler to the state meet in Class 1A-4A.

Sam Waters (171-pounds) will represent the Hornets.

The state tournament begins this Friday and continues with the championship matches on Saturday at the civic complex
