Steven Michael, a 17-year-old junior at Shelby Academy, is &8220;Shelby County Reporter&8221; Student of the Week.

Nancy Ingram, who teaches chemistry and life skills, selected him for the honor.

Ingram and Christy Ford, who teaches pre-calculus, said, &8220;Steven is very responsible and works hard to achieve his goals. He supports his school by participating in various activities.&8221;

Ingram and Ford also said, &8220;Teachers appreciate his willingness to accept responsibility. Steven tries to find real life applications for what he learns.&8221;

Steven is the son of Susan and David Michael. He has one brother, Daniel, 13, who is an eighth grader also attending Shelby Academy. And he is the grandson of Joyce and Ray Michael and Joyce and Ben Hubbard.

Steven said history is probably his most favorite subject. &8220;I kind of like the politics of history and studying World War II,&8221; he said.

Not surprisingly, Steven&8217;s favorite teacher is history teacher Brandon Gurganus.

&8220;I just like the way he presents the stuff to us. He gives us all a chance to say what we think about it… our opinion… if we were in that person&8217;s situation, what we would do,&8221; Steven said.

Steven takes advanced placement math, is in the National Honor Society and was a Current Events winner in the ninth grade.

He plays center for the school football team, is a catcher for the school baseball team and is on the school power lifting team.

&8220;I like to hunt and spend most of my time at the (Montevallo) fire station,&8221; Steven said.

He explained Montevallo has a secondary program for ages 14-18 who run with the department on fire calls and who work outside around structural fires. &8220;I love doing that,&8221; he said.

Steven said he looks up to President George Bush because, &8220;He&8217;s a man. He stands by his decisions rather its popular or not.&8221;

As to the future, Steven said he wants to be a fireman. &8220;I just like helping people, and I just love everything about it.&8221;

Steven said he plans to attend college at Auburn University. He said, &8220;There&8217;s a student firefighter program at Auburn University, and I&8217;ve always been a fan (of Auburn).&8221;
