The third-ranked Oak Mountain Eagles boys’ soccer team rebounded from a lackluster first half Tuesday night against the Thompson Warriors to win their Class 6A first round playoff game 4-1.

&uot;We were too emotional in the first half,&uot; Oak Mountain head coach Ryan Patridge said. &uot;With an opponent like Thompson, you have to take them seriously the entire game.&uot;

Eagles senior forward Loy Vaughn scored two goals for Oak Mountain (19-4-1) in the contest, including the game-winner in the 18:29 into the game off an assist by Jonathan Guthrie.

&uot;Loy is so quick and so strong,&uot; Eagles’ head coach Ryan Patridge said. &uot;He comes out every night and brings his best game.&uot;

Vaughn added another goal in the 52nd minute of the game to make it 3-1.

Chandler Hoffman scored the game’s first goal while Guthrie capped off the Eagles’ scoring with 17:48 left in the match.

The Eagles advance to the second round of the Class 6A playoffs where they will travel to face second-ranked Shades Valley.

The matchup has extra meaning for Patridge, who served as an assistant coach at Shades Valley (19-1-1) from 1998 to 2004.

&uot;They’re going to be very good,&uot; Patridge said. &uot;They have a great goalkeeper and great players all around.&uot;

Patridge said his team will have to be more wise with the ball in their next game.

&uot;We need to be more efficient and smarter with the ball,&uot; he said. &uot;Shades Valley will make you pay if you’re not careful.&uot;

Oak Mountain and Shades Valley will play on either Friday or Saturday in second round play.
