It was Calera senior thrower Nick Cannady&8217;s turn on Thursday in the Class 2A discus throw state championships at Heardmont Park.

Cannady finished second in the event last year and third the year before, leaving him with one final chance to earn a discus title before graduating.

Cannady won the title on his final throw in competition, beating out Josh McCorly of Phil Campbell by three inches with a throw of 120 feet, nine inches.

&8220;I just tried to keep it in bounds,&8221; Cannady said. &8220;I had to take a deep breath and focus.&8221;

Cannady also had to battle with a last minute change to his discus in the competition.

&8220;I usually throw with a rubber disc,&8221; he said. &8220;But I was told today that I had to throw with a metal disc instead.&8221;

The change in apparatus didn&8217;t seem to bother Cannady.

&8220;I told myself that I didn&8217;t like this at all, but I needed to go out and do my best with what I had.&8221;

Cannady also competed in the boys&8217; Class 2A shot put. He finished sixth in the event with a throw of 39 feet, 10 and one-quarter inches.

His teammate, C.J. Cohill finished seventh in the event while Vincent&8217;s Eric Arrowood finished fifth
