Local seniors win walking medals

The Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging recently launched a new heath prevention program in Shelby County senior centers.

The program, titled &8220;Walking Works,&8221; was developed to encourage seniors to walk at least 30 minutes a day or 8,500 steps a day, five days a week. Each senior that chose to participate received a free pedometer to keep track of the number of steps they had taken.

As an incentive, seniors reaching specific levels set by the President&8217;s Council on Fitness receive a gold, silver or bronze medallions to showcase their success.

Individuals stepping into the limelight in Columbiana were: gold, Helen Hughes and Gerald Millican; silver, Sarah Millican; and bronze, Dorothy Waldrop, Jean Schofield and Luther Johnson.

Montevallo honorees were: gold Nettie Edgil; and silver Betty Nix and Opal Conn
