Calera firefighters were able to save part of the Chilton-Shelby Mental Health Center after it caught fire last Wednesday.

Calera fire chief Tommy Moon said the blaze was called in at 1:32 p.m. and had developed into a major fire.

&8220;Two engine companies responded,&8221; Moon said.

About 20 firefighters battled the blaze and were able to save a large number of important documents, Moon said.

&8220;They did an excellent job under adverse circumstances,&8221; he said of the firefighters. &8220;They salvaged an enormous amount of personnel and client records.&8221;

Calera Public Works Supervisor David Jones aided in getting the blaze under control, Moon said, by helping shift the city&8217;s water supply.

&8220;David told me that that I needed to let him know if we needed help,&8221; Moon said. &8220;I called him shorty after we arrived at the fire and he switched some of the city&8217;s supply to give us the water we needed.

Moon said the blaze began in a storage room, but a cause had not yet been determined at presstime
