Last week dozens of Montevallo students were back in school, vacation Bible school that is.
More than 70 children, kindergarteners through sixth-graders, attended the community VBS, a joint effort by area churches.
For the past five years Montevallo&8217;s First United Methodist, St. Thomas Apostle Catholic, St. Andrews Episcopal, University Baptist and Presbyterian USA churches have sponsored the one VBS.
&8220;It&8217;s good for the kids. They can see that we have more in common than different,&8221; said coordinator Kathy Daum. &8220;We can also pool our resources &8212; some churches that probably could not at all have a VBS can now be part of one.&8221;
The location rotates annually among the larger churches and is staffed by volunteers from each denomination.
This year&8217;s vacation Bible school was hosted by University Baptist Church and had an archeology/treasure chest theme.
&8220;I like the crafts because its fun, and I can be creative,&8221; said fifth-grader Audrianne Young. &8220;I also like the songs because they are about Jesus but fun.&8221;
Besides the music, arts and crafts and outdoor activities, the children dug for hidden treasurer chests and constantly shouted the VBS&8217;s motto: &8220;God treasures you … dig it!&8221;
