FROM STAFF REPORTS

Local blood-supply levels have dipped this summer as regular blood donors take time off for vacations and other activities that prevent them from donating, according to a press release from Lifesouth Community Blood Center.

A blood drive at the Sav-Mor Food Outlet on Highway 25 in Calera this Friday is one of many efforts that Lifesouth is making to try and combat the shortages.

&8220;Lifesouth provides 100 percent of the blood used at Shelby Baptist Medical Center,&8221; the release stated. &8220;All blood donated to Lifesouth goes to patients in Birmingham area hospitals.&8221;

The Calera drive will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with all donors receiving a complimentary cholesterol screening.

All donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and show a photo I.D.
