The City of Pelham received approval from the Shelby County Commission on July 10 to join into the county&8217;s contract with Waste Management.
While the move will likely raise the price for garbage pickup in Pelham nearly $2 a month, officials said gas prices would have likely increased the city&8217;s rates anyway.
Shelby County Environmental Manager Robert Kelley said the price will increase from $9.63 a month to $10.62 a month &045; the same as residents in unincorporated Shelby County.
The city&8217;s solo contract with Waste Management expires on Sept. 30.
Shelby County Environmental Manager Robert Kelley confirmed that Pelham will be under the county&8217;s contract starting Oct. 1.
&8220;This is a good move for Pelham, for the county and for Waste Management,&8221; Kelley said. &8220;Pelham&8217;s rate would have gone up in September if they had tried to renegotiate on their own.&8221;
Kelley said that some municipalities have seen increases to as high as $17 a month because of gas prices.
&8220;We&8217;ve had a lower rate on our contract since 2004,&8221; he said.
Pelham residents will not see any interruption in service or pickup times, Kelley said
