Shelby County opened its third licensing office last week in the Inverness Corners shopping center on Highway 280.

The new facility will allow residents to renew their driver&8217;s and boating licenses or car tags. The office will not, however, conduct driving tests due to space.

Shelby County finance manager Butch Burbage said the building is staffed by 12 people.

&8220;These are not new positions,&8221; Burbage said. &8220;We hired these people about a year ago and have had them working at our other offices. They were aware that they could be moved to the Inverness office once it opened.&8221;

The 32,000 square-foot building is much larger, Burbage said, than the license office in Columbiana.

&8220;We can handle a lot of people up there,&8221; he said. &8220;It&8217;s a lot more convenient for residents along the Highway 280 corridor. Before now they&8217;ve had to drive to Columbiana or Pelham.&8221;

August car tag renewal notices will let residents in the county know about the new office, Burbage said. He said the county is paying nearly $5,000 a month to lease the office space in the shopping center and the new office will cost $350,000 a year to operate
