Shelby County has hired a new planning supervisor for its development services department.

David Hunke took over the position from former supervisor Todd McDonald earlier this year, bringing planning experience and knowledge to Shelby County development.

Shelby County&8217;s manager of development services Ray Hamilton said Hunke brings a variety of knowledge to the department.

&8220;David rose to the top quickly of our five finalists for the position,&8221; Hamilton said. &8220;He&8217;s spent time in both the public and private sectors of planning, which will help us greatly.&8221;

Before coming to Shelby County, Hunke spent time in Athens, Ga. as a transportation planner for the city and county. He moved to Birmingham in 1987 and worked for the Birmingham Regional Planning Commission. He also spent time in the private sector before moving south of Birmingham to Shelby County.

&8220;This is an excellent opportunity for me professionally,&8221; Hunke said. &8220;The county has an excellent planning staff and is really looking to the future.&8221;

Hunke lives with his wife Sherrie and their two children, Kenny and Tommy, in Hoover
