Calera Eagles move to 3-0

Montgomery Catholic was no match for 3A Calera (3-0,2-0) last Friday night.

The Eagles took region foe Montgomery Catholic down 34-13 even with a couple of players playing in different positions than usual.

&8220;I think the defense played very well, very solid,&8221; said Calera head football coach Mac Thompson.

He said Montgomery Catholic runs the Wing T offense, which one doesn&8217;t see a whole lot. And his Eagles only gave up 13 points.

Thompson said his defense got a lot of penetration to stop it before it got started.

For this contest with Kaderius Lacey was out with a strained knee. As a result, Earl Haynes moved to an H-back position, and Paul Winterbottom started at quarterback.

Brian Watts caught eight passes for 73 yards; Haynes caught five passes for 140 yards and a touchdown; Chris Cunningham caught one pass for 11 yards and a touchdown; and Dominique Wilson caught two passes for 42 yards and a touchdown.

Winterbottom completed 17 of 33 passes for 306 yards and three touchdowns.

Haynes also rushed six times for 17 yards and a touchdown and Winterbottom rushed 11 times for 28 yards and a touchdown.

The Eagles picked up 20 first down to 12, passed for 308 yards to 122 yards and rushed for 109 yards to 146.

Calera travels to face region opponent Marbury Friday night.
