Calera edges region foe LaFayette

The playoff bound 3A Calera Eagles held on to defeat a tough Region 3 LaFayette squad 13-6 at home last Friday night.

Eagles&8217; head football coach Mac Thompson said he thought his team played well for the wet and rainy conditions and managed to pull off the victory against a bunch of Bulldogs, who were big up front.

He also said his defense looked good.

The Eagles rushed for 118 yards while holding LaFayette to 91 yards on the ground and passed for 88 yards while holding LaFayette to 35.

The Eagles improved to 8-1 over all and 6-1 in region play and will be in the 3A state playoffs.

Dominique Wilson scored the first touchdown of the night for Calera on a 17-yard run.

LaFayette got on the scoreboard thanks to a 49-yard fumble return.

And Earl Haynes closed out the scoring on a 99-yard kick return. Seth Merritte handled PAT duties for the Eagles.

Wilson led the Eagles on the ground with 87 years, while Calera quarterback Paul Winterbottom passed for 88 yards.

Wendell DeMoss and Matt Tracey led the Eagles with six tackles each.

Up next for Calera will be non-region 3A Weaver at home.
