Shelby County owns Chelsea no more

What a weekend of football it has been with Chelsea, Pelham and Vincent claiming region titles and other county teams making the playoffs.

I went 10-1 with my predictions and would have been 11-1 except I forgot to include my prediction last week that Montevallo would beat B.B. Comer 35-7. They won 42-16.

And yes, I called the Briarwood Chelsea game correctly down to the 7-point margin of victory. Palmer was healthy and he ran and ran.

As it stands, I am now 87-30, for an improvement to 74 percent.

We have a couple of cross-county rivalry games, including Vincent at Montevallo and Chelsea at Shelby County.

We also have a couple of AISA schools hosting first round state playoff games including Wilcox Academy at Kingwood Christian School and East Memorial Christian Academy at Shelby Academy.

But the Game of the Week has to be Chelsea at Shelby County.

– Chelsea (8-1, 7-0) is coming off a huge road win over Briarwood and will next visit non-region, 5A Shelby County. Shelby County (6-3, 5-2) just defeated Region 3 foe Wilcox Central 50-18.

Game of the Week Prediction: Chelsea 35, Shelby County 21.

– 5A Briarwood Christian School (7-2, 6-1) is coming off a shocking 14-7 home loss to Chelsea for the Region 5 title and will next visit 6A Jackson-Olin, which lost to Hueytown 21-12.

Prediction: Briarwood 21, Jackson-Olin 14.

– 3A Calera (8-1, 5-1) is coming off a 13-6 home win over Region 3 opponent LaFaytte and will next host non region 3A Weaver.

Prediction: Calera 28, Weaver 16.

– 1A, AISA Region 1 Cornerstone (6-4, 5-3) is coming off a 34-13 loss to 2A, AISA Kingwood Christian School. However, Cornerstone will travel to Region 2 Autauga Academy for the first round of the state playoffs. Autauga Academy defeated West Alabama Prep 48-0.

Prediction: Autauga Academy 28, Cornerstone Christian School 15.

– 2A, AISA Region 2 Kingwood Christian School

(8-2, 5-2) is coming off a win over 1A Cornerstone and will host Region 1 Wilcox Academy in the first round of the state playoffs. Wilcox Academy beat Morgan Academy 6-3.

Prediction: Kingwood 35, Wilcox Academy 16.

– 3A Region 3 Montevallo (6-3, 4-3) is coming off a big 42-16 win over region opponent B.B. Comer on the road to make the state playoffs. The Bulldogs next host 2A Vincent (6-3, 6-1), which just defeated Victory Christian to clinch their Region 5 crown.

Prediction: Montevallo 28, Vincent 7.

– Oak Mountain (4-5, 3-4) is coming off a playoffs knockout blow at the hands of the 6A Region 6 Hoover Bucs 42-12. However, they will next host 5A Erwin, which beat Walker 28-3 in a pride match to see if they can go 5-5.

Prediction: Oak Mountain 14, Erwin 8.

– 6A Region 5 Pelham (8-1, 7-0) is coming off a 26-21 home win over Tuscaloosa County for the region crown. They will next visit 6A Vestavia Hills, which just lost to Homewood 28-10.

Prediction: Pelham 28, Vestavia Hills 21.

– The 6A Region 5 Spain Park Jaguars (5-4, 3-4) are coming off a tough 33-14 home loss to Minor and will next host non region 6A Hillcrest, which beat Northridge 37-7.

Prediction: Spain Park 21, Hillcrest 14.

– Shelby Academy is 8-2 overall and 7-1 in AISA Region 1 coming off a 43-6 non region road win over Abbeville Christian Academy. The Raiders will host East Memorial Christian Academy, which defeated Open Door 49-0, in the first round of the state playoffs.

Prediction: Shelby Academy 48, East Memorial 24.

– The 6A Region 5 Thompson Warriors (7-2, 5-2) are coming off a 42-14 region win on the road against Paul Bryant. The team will travel to host 6A Homewood, which beat Vestavia Hills 28-10, in a non-region match that could affect the playoff picture.
