Pelham is growing a little more like Scotland, at least for Fire Chief Gary Waters and his entire command staff.
The firemen represented the country known for its golf and plaid by sporting kilts to the new fire station No. 5 open house on Sunday, Dec. 3. The station is located in the Ballantrae area.
Pelham Mayor Bobby Hayes said he knew an additional station would be needed when developer Steve Mobley approached him about building 3500 new homes around Ballantrae&8217;s golf course.
&8220;This is a joint effort between the developer and the city,&8221; said Hayes. &8220;When considering such a large project, safety needs to be incorporated.&8221;
Station No. 5 opened in June and staffs four people per shift continually around the clock. The station houses a pumper truck and a rescue/medical vehicle.
&8220;This is a great way to build between the municipality and the developer,&8221; said Hayes.
Hayes said there had been several medical emergencies since the station opened.
Before station No. 5 arrived, fire runs to the area took nearly 10 to 11 minutes. Now with the new station, the truck&8217;s times are three to four minutes. &8220;The new station has been well received in the community. The station is unlike any other, representing the culture of Ballentrae,&8221; said Hayes
