Garden homes may soon be built in Harpersville &045; a first for the small town.
Harpersville Mayor Theoangleo Perkins said several developers have approached him about changing the town&8217;s zoning ordinances to allow garden home construction.
Currently, the town&8217;s housing regulations mandate that home lots be no less than 15,000 square feet.
However, Perkins said
developers would like to see lots closer to 6,000 square feet in size.
The mayor said it would not hurt the council to explore any option that would bring more residents to Harpersville.
Perkins expects the town to consider the changes early next year.
Any ordinances would first have to be approved by the town&8217;s planning commission.
After that, the changes would go before a public hearing and then the town council for approval.
If the ordinances are passed, the town would go from having just two zoning categories (R1 and R2) to six.
