Students square off in reading competition

On Friday, March 23, students from four Shelby County Schools battled over books.
The competition, &8220;Battle of the Books,&8221; is patterned after the system&8217;s Scholars Bowl.
Calera Middle School students, Dillon Agnew, Matt Bloom, Keith Cofer, Megan Green and Haley Payton competed against Columbiana Middle School students, Linda Aultman, Tiffany Bush, Breanna Lomas, Sidney Reynolds, Samantha Roberson and Kristen Schu. These middle school students read eight novels to prepare for the competition, which consisted of questions developed from the books.
Montevallo High School students, Amber Parks, Shaelan Perry, Tione Thrift, Krista Vaughan and Rachel Wagner, competed against Shelby County High School Students, Deidre Antolini, Elizabeth Edwards, Olivia Folmar and Chandal Phillips.
Columbiana Middle School won the middle school competition. Montevallo High School won the high school competition. Sidney Reynolds of Columbiana Middle School was the overall scorer for the middle school competition. Olivia Folmar of Shelby County High School was the overall scorer for the high school competition.
The winning schools took home unique trophies designed by Mary Foy, library media specialist at Valley Intermediate School. The team sponsors were Rebecca McKenzie, library media specialist at Calera Middle School; Sheikla Blount, Library Media Specialist at Columbiana Middle School; Anita Glover, library media specialist at Montevallo High School; and Steve Latham, library media specialist at Shelby County High School
