Pelham may add sales tax holiday

Kindergarten is the age when student&8217;s supply lists include crayons, nap mats and Elmer&8217;s glue. For many parents though, these lists mean an expensive bill at Staples or Dollar General.

That&8217;s one of several reasons why Pelham city council members are considering a weekend free of sales tax Aug 3-5.

If parents were to purchase every item on their child&8217;s supply list they could expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $150 dollars.

These amounts don&8217;t even consider the hundreds of dollars parents spend on new clothes, tennis shoes and other necessities a new school year brings.

Valley Elementary principal Resia Brooks said the beginning of the school year can really hit parents&8217; pockets. &8220;Anything to alleviate some of the expenses will be beneficial to our students and their families,&8221; Brooks said.

Items included in the tax-free weekend would be anything used for classrooms, as well as computer supplies up to $750, clothing items up to $100 and books under $30.

The council is expected to vote on the holiday at its May 7 meeting.
