Lady Dawgs fall short at Leeds

Two innings made all the difference for the Montevallo Lady Bulldogs in the second round of the AHSAA softball playoffs Saturday.

Anna Nix pitched seven scoreless innings against third-ranked Leeds in game one, but a string of hits in the eighth inning gave the Green Wave a 3-0 victory, as they went on to win game two 6-5.

&8220;To play the number three team in the state to an extra inning game and a one run game was something,&8221; Montevallo head coach Ronnie Holsombeck said.

The Lady &8217;Dawgs took an early 3-1 lead in game two, but a no-outs error helped lead to a four-run third inning and give Leeds a 5-3 lead. They later added a run in the fourth.

Brianne Edwards hit a three-run home run to pull Montevallo (24-17) within a run in the fifth, but the Lady &8217;Dawgs were unable to push across a tying run.

&8220;It was a disappointing end, but I couldn&8217;t be happier with the effort,&8221; Holsombeck said.
