CHELSEA &8212; Chelsea soccer coach Samantha Corker has resigned to take over the girls&8217; soccer program at the new Gadsden City High School, which opened last fall combining the old Gadsden High, Emma Sansom High and Litchfield High.

The departure comes after leading the boys&8217; and girls&8217; programs to their best seasons in school history.

&8220;I tried to build a program, and I think I did a good job with all of the players working hard,&8221; said Corker, a Gadsden High graduate.

Corker, who was known to scrimmage with her team in practice, told her players last Wednesday that &8220;they couldn&8217;t just quit because (she) wasn&8217;t the coach.&8221;

Athletic director Wade Waldrop says Corker will be missed.

&8220;The next person that comes in to be the coach is going to step into a great situation. That&8217;s a testament of how strong of a coach she is. The next person will obviously have big shoes to fill,&8221; Waldrop said.
