As the Dixie Youth baseball season heats up, four teams from Shelby County are still alive in the hunt for the AAA (9-year-olds) District 4 title.
Vincent hosted one sub-district tournament, which ended with the Chelsea American team facing Calera in Friday night&8217;s championship game. Calera reached the game by defeating Vincent 19-9 in semifinal action, while Chelsea beat Montevallo on their side of the bracket.
Chelsea American coach Mark Burgert said he was pleased with his team&8217;s defense, as Austin Headley threw two perfect innings and struck out three Calera batters. Jacob Green added a perfect inning from the mound and contributed offensively, going three-for-three with two RBIs as Chelsea won 21-2. Chelsea hosted Wilcox County Monday night to open the District 4 tournament.
In the other sub-district tournament, host team Wilsonville, coached by Michael Venable, earned the right to host this week&8217;s district tournament.
En route to its sub-district championship, Wilsonville defeated Chelsea 5-4 last Saturday, beat Clanton 13-3 on Monday, and outscored Chelsea 15-5 Wednesday. Spencer Dill, Hunter Horton, and Cody Jones worked the mound for Wilsonville, while Justus Martin provided offensive spark at the plate.
The Wilsonville All-Stars faced Calera in the first round of the double-elimination tournament, while Chelsea&8217;s National team faced Thomasville.
The winner of the district tournament will move on to compete in Prattville, where the AAA state tournament begins July 21.
