The inaugural University of Montevallo bass team leads the 2007 National Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship after one day on Lake Lewisville in Texas.

Team captain Casey Crumpton, of Columbiana, and Clent Davis, or Maplesville, teamed up to bring in five fish at 13.24 pounds, beating out Louisiana Tech’s weight by .26 pounds. North Carolina State University is third with a weight of 12.07 after the opening day.

Helena native Rusty Jones and Pelham native Daniel Statum caught four fish to lead the University of Alabama team to a 12th place start at the championship with a weight of 7.78 pounds. Faulkner University in Montgomery is the third school from Alabama competing in the tournament, which concludes Saturday
