Prep recap: Lions one win away from area title

Adam Russell did it again Wednesday, this time from the plate, as the Briarwood Christian School Lions took down the Ramsay Rams in Class 5A, Area 8 action, 17-3.

Russell fanned 20 batters in the April 2 contest with Ramsay, but his helped propel the Lions to victory Wednesday as the senior went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

The win places the Lions in a tie with John Carroll for the area championship, and the two teams will face off for the title today at 4:30 p.m. at Spain Park.

The Lions jumped on the Rams early, but an 11-run third inning ended any chance of a Ramsay comeback.

Ben Bracewell finished 2-for-2 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored, while Jonathan Logan was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Austin Lankford was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored and Paul McKelvey was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Evan Simmons (4-0) picked up the win, finishing with four strikeouts.

Pleasant Grove 3, Pelham 2:The Pleasant Grove Spartans scored a run on a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday to take the win over Pelham, 3-2. Pelham tied the game in the top half of the seventh after Andrew Bishop tripled and then scored on a sacrifice fly, but the Panthers could not hold off the Spartans.

SOFTBALL

Indian Springs 9, Altamont 4: Tullia Rushton was 2-for-3 with a double two RBIs Wednesday to lead Indian Springs over Altamont, 9-4. Jillian Theibert (6-5) picked up the win for Springs, striking out six, while giving only four hits over six innings.

SOCCER

Spain Park 2, Briarwood 1: Kim Pettit and Marie Blunt each scored first-half goals Wednesday to lead Class 6A’s No. 4 Spain Park Jaguars over Class 5A’s No. 1 Briarwood Christian Lions, 2-1. Cavanagh Baker had an assist for the Jags in the win. For Briarwood, Lindsey Sillers scored the Lions’ only goal.
